When asked whether hip-hop is suffering from a case of misrepresentation, DMX offers his own perspective. “It is,” he explains, before citing a catalyst for change. Given his OG status, he’s certainly able to play a role, though X believes the responsibility should be shouldered. “But whoever has the ability to, first, the insight to see it and the talent and the ability to, you know, do the right thing. It’s all of our responsibility. Whoever can, not just myself.”

On that note, X mentions one of the game’s most celebrated topics, the glorification of drugs, as part of the greater issue. “They’re all promoting drug use,” he says. “If that’s what you wanna do, that’s your business, but you ain’t gotta promote it like it’s cool and make it cool. Kids walk around like, I’m popping molly, I’m popping percs!”

On that note, X takes a moment to reflect on his own drug-free lifestyle. “I don’t do anything,” says DMX. “I have a drink now and then, but that was never the problem.” When asked about the specific problem, DMX is straight up about it. “Cocaine. Crack. I think we kind of knew that was the problem,” he says, his tone revealing a hint of annoyance. “I would get in trouble. It wasn’t worth it.” It seems difficult for X to reflect on the darkness, but Big Boy makes sure to send him some positive vibes. X seems to lighten up, explaining that he’s been feeling the love in the streets since his release. “I come across my fans in the street, they letting me know.”
