Redman 

Reginald “Reggie” Noble (born April 17, 1970), better known by his stage name Redman, is an American rapper, DJ, record producer, and actor. He rose to fame in the early 1990s as an artist on the Def Jam label. He is also well known for his collaborations with his close friend Method Man, as one-half of the rap duo Method Man & Redman, including their starring roles in films and sitcoms. He was also a member of the Def Squad in the late 1990s.

In 1987, Redman was expelled from Montclair State University his freshman year due to poor academic performance at age 16. Having no other options, Redman then went back home to live with his mother, Darlene Noble, who eventually kicked him out of her house for selling cocaine. Two years later, at age 18, Redman was a young DJ-MC who went by the name “DJ Kut-Killa”. He freestyled over funk and hip hop instrumental tracks on vinyl records in various parks and house parties around New York and New Jersey. Redman was eventually discovered by Erick Sermon of EPMD while he was a DJ for Lords of the Underground. Erick Sermon said when he met Redman for the first time, “I knew there was something spectacular about him. Right off the bat. The next day, we talked. And within the next two or three months, he moved to Long Island, to my crib. He moved right in to my apartment.” After moving in with Erick Sermon, Redman went out on tour with EPMD. While on tour with the group he did everything from carrying the group’s bags to coming out on stage and doing rap freestyles. In 1990 at a EPMD show in New York, Redman was invited onstage by Erick Sermon where he delivered a rap freestyle that changed his life. He freestyled a song describing himself as rapper using every letter in the alphabet from A to Z. After this, Redman was an official rap artist and began production with Erick Sermon on his first major label album, Whut? Thee Album.

Keith Murray

Keith Omar Murray (born September 13, 1974) is an American rapper and a member of the hip hop trio Def Squad, which includes fellow rappers Redman and Erick Sermon.

Before Murray ever recorded an album, he traded verses with Big Daddy Kane under the name MC Do Damage. Later, he was introduced to Erick Sermon of EPMD by K-Solo. Sermon included Murray on his album No Pressure on the single “Hostile”. His first album, The Most Beautifullest Thing in This World, was released in 1994 on Jive Records. The title track from this album remains Murray’s biggest solo hit. This album was given 4 mics by The Source. Murray continued to enjoy a high media-profile by appearing on a Coca-Cola advertisement and guesting on remixes of Mary J. Blige’s ‘Be Happy’, Total’s ‘Can’t You See’ and LL Cool J’s ‘I Shot Ya’.

Murray’s second album Enigma was released in 1996 on Jive. It received similar ratings from critics, but it was not quite as commercially successful as the previous album. Murray also appeared on Busta Rhymes’ debut album The Coming, representing the Def Squad on the track “Flipmode Squad Meets Def Squad” along with Redman and Jamal. In 1998, The Def Squad covered “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang. They would later release their own album, El Niño. Murray’s third album It’s a Beautiful Thing was released in 1999. Murray also appeared on the song “Home Alone” by R. Kelly.

Def Jam released his He’s Keith Murray in 2003, containing the single “Yeah, Yeah U Know It.” This song has guest appearances from fellow Def Squad members Redman and Erick Sermon. Murray dedicated “Christina” to his sister. That same year, Murray was featured on the video game Def Jam Vendetta. Shortly after this, Murray was accused of choking two employees of Def Jam – although he said the confrontation was limited to words – and was subsequently dropped.

He released his fifth solo album Rap-Murr-Phobia on July 31, 2007. It debuted at number 52 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. The lead single was “Nobody Do It Better” featuring Tyrese and Junior.

Murray’s vocals/crowd hyping appears on the song “Elektrobank” by The Chemical Brothers from their album Dig Your Own Hole.

Erick Sermon (aka E-Dub) 

Erick Sermon (born November 25, 1968)  is an American rapper, musician, and record producer. Sermon is best known as one-third, alongside PMD & DJ Scratch, of late-1980s–1990s hip hop group EPMD and for production work.

Erick Sermon started professionally selling music in 1986 as a Producer and Artist of the legendary hip hop group EPMD. He began recording solo albums for Def Jam in 1993; in 1997, he rejoined EPMD. The following year, Sermon, Murray and Redman recorded a cover version of “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang, the first hit hip hop record. EPMD disbanded a second time in 1999.

In 2000, Sermon moved over to J Records, and released the album Music the following year. The album’s first single, “Music”, featured guest vocals from Marvin Gaye, which Sermon reportedly culled from unreleased recordings found in a small record shop in London. “Music” went on to become Sermon’s highest-charting song, peaking at #22 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #2 on the R&B chart. Sermon’s second album on J Records, React, was released in 2002. React’s title track peaked at #36 on the Billboard Hot 100, but the album sold poorly and Sermon was dropped from the label in 2003. In a June 30, 2004 interview with HipHopDX.com, Sermon told music journalist Bayer Mack, “Things weren’t right at J Records. Clive Davis and them don’t believe in promotion. When Puffy had Bad Boy at Arista, it was him doing all the [promotional] work.” He also stated Busta Rhymes and Wyclef Jean had similar issues with J Records.

Sermon went on to establish his Def Squad imprint with Universal Records and released his sixth solo album, Chilltown, New York, in 2004. The album was powered by the single “Feel It” (which contained a sample of reggae/R&B singer Sean Paul), a song which became a success in the United States.

In an interview, he stated that he was going to step aside and try to get upcoming artists in the spotlight. However, Sermon has not stopped in the music industry, as he produced the song “Goldmine” on Busta Rhymes‘ album, The Big Bang in 2006. Soon after, Sermon has recorded “Don’t Make No Sense” with Def Squad. He also collaborated with Redman and produced a few songs on the album Red Gone Wild while also making an appearance with Def Squad member Keith Murray.

In early 2008, Sermon and Smith started their own record label called EP Records, distributed by RBS/Universal Music Group. The seventh EPMD album, We Mean Business, came out in December 2008.

Sermon was featured in the final episode of Yo! MTV Raps in a freestyle session featuring artists such as Rakim, KRS-One, Chubb Rock, MC Serch and Craig Mack.
