Charlamagne and DJ Envy spoke about Hov’s longevity in the latest episode of The Breakfast Club’s Rumor Report.
“Why are people ranking this Hov verse?” Charlamagne asked. “Like I don’t think you can rank Hov verses like there’s too many that are great if not better than this ‘GOD DID’ verse, so how do you even get to thinking about ranking them?”
DJ Envy chimed in to echo a point made by Young Guru: that JAY-Z is 52 years old and is still rapping with a youthful intensity.
“I think that’s what’s amazing people,” Charlamagne said. “‘Cause to me, the verse is really great, but here’s the thing. JAY-Z is really great. He’s been consistently really great for a long time so when people say, ‘Oh my God! This is one of Hov’s greatest verses of all time!’ It’s like, of course it is. Hov has got a bunch of verses that are his greatest of all time, and that’s why he’s considered the greatest of all time.”
He continued: “Like I never in my life thought of what Jay’s greatest verse of all time is cause there’s too many. Like I have my personal favorites but to say what the greatest of all time is that constantly changes cause JAY-Z has a verse for every situation in life.
“So depending on what you might be going through or what you might be feeling. You might hear one verse one day and be like. ‘Oh that’s my joint.”
Charlamagne went on to say his favorite Hov verses were his guest bars on Jeezy’s “Go Crazy (Remix)” and his guest appearance on Kanye West’s “Diamonds From Sierra Leone.” He then quickly added in Hov’s “U Don’t Know (Remix)” featuring M.O.P. off The Blueprint 2.
JAY-Z’s verse off DJ Khaled’s song “GOD DID” has been the talk of town for days now. In a recent Twitter Spaces conversation between Hov, Khaled, and Rob Markman, the Roc-A-Fella mogul said pulling off a song of this magnitude is never easy.
“Congratulations on an amazing album,” JAY-Z told Khaled. “People think it’s easy. It’s not easy to put all these people together and get greatness out of ’em — deal with so many egos. ‘Cause everybody wanna be the best and everybody’s trying to be, you know, whatever, whatever it is.”
JAY-Z continued: “It’s an amazing display of unity. It feels like an All Star game when these albums come out; it’s a beautiful time for the culture. Everybody’s tapped in and tuned in. No matter what they tell you, they all tapped in and they all tuned in and everybody wanna be on them joints too. Believe that.”
“GOD DID” features on DJ Khaled’s 13th studio album of the same name, which dropped on Friday (August 26) and sported additional features from Drake, Kanye West, Eminem, Travis Scott, Future, SZA, Lil Baby, Lil Wayne, 21 Savage, Don Toliver, Juice WRLD, Jadakiss, Latto, City Girls, Kodak Black, Quavo, Rick Ross and more.
