Nicki Minaj appears to be putting together a star-studded posse cut — but it’s not a rap song.
On Tuesday night (September 7), the Queen of Hip Hop announced she’s back in the booth by sharing a snippet of new music in an Instagram Story. The 15-second video finds Nicki showcasing her angelic vocals as opposed to her lethal rapping ability. “Been rlly enjoying recording again,” she added on Twitter.
“Barbz: ask Keke, Tamar & Brandy to redo this,” she asked her famously dedicated fanbase. “That’s what I sound like in my head. Would love to hear ppl who can rlly do it.” (Nicki later clarified she meant Keke Wyatt, not Keke Palmer, who is still her “boo.”)
Nicki Minaj also reached out to the new school of R&B goddesses by asking Summer Walker, Jhené Aiko and Kehlani to lend their vocals to the song. “Summer, Jhené & Kehlani can be good in the blend as well with their harmonies,” she tweeted.
More than half of the singers are already on board. Kehlani replied to Nicki’s request by tweeting, “what is happenING HEY,” while Summer Walker tweeted back, “I’d love that,” and Keke Wyatt replied, “my beW.” Jhené Aiko let Nicki know she’s down to contribute a full verse: “for sure. lemme get a verse too.”
Once all the vocals come in (word to DJ Khaled), it appears Nicki Minaj plans to turn the components into a star-studded song. “Once I have the a capella vocals I’ll put Smthn special together with it,” she promised.
Those who prefer Nicki Minaj in her Hip Hop bag shouldn’t feel too left out, though; she later hinted at orchestrating the same move with female MCs. “I’m gonna do smthn similar with female rappers,” she tweeted with a crying face emoji. “But that’s for a diff night.”
All of this will come as welcome news to Nicki Minaj fans, who have been waiting three years for a new album from Young Money’s First Lady. Her last full-length effort, the platinum-certified Queen, arrived back in 2018.
