LOS ANGELES, CA – Alas, it’s a New Year, there is a new president in the White House and HipHopDX’s New Music Friday coverage has returned to illuminate the hottest albums dropping this side of the equator.

Major highlights include a deluxe album that finds Young Dolph reaching back into 2020, a new body of work from Pennsylvania rapper Lil Skies and the debut album of “Throat Babies” architect BRS Kash, among others.

Check out the list of releases for the week ending Friday (January 21).

Lil Skies — Unbothered

Mirroring the length of his 2019 debut Shelby, Lil Skies’ new album Unbothered also features 14-tracks. The “Having My Way” rapper also utilized his features sparingly this go around as well and recruits guest verses from Lil Durk, Wiz Khalifa and Jodeci respectively.

Young Dolph — Rich Slave (Deluxe)

Dolph’s Rich Slave is affirmatively his highest-charting commercial effort thus far after peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 last year — which is why it makes the perfect candidate for a deluxe edition this year. The Paper Route Empire boss adds eight new tracks to his re-worked edition along with features from Key Glock and Kenny Muney.

BRS Kash — Kash Only

BRS Kash’s vividly vulgar viral-hit “Throat Baby” currently has amassed over 25 million streams on Spotify alone since it dropped last year. Now, the Atlanta rapper is about to unleash the remix along with his new mixtape Kash Only. In addition to the raunchy remix, expect features from DaBaby, Toosii, Mulatto and more.

Peewee Longway & Cassius Jay — Longway Sinatra 2

Young Dolph isn’t the only artist reaching back into their discography bags in order to reboot projects from years past. Atlanta rap artist Peewee Longway has re-joined forces with fellow homegrown producer Cassius Jay for the reprise of his 2016 trap banger Longway Sinatra.

DJ Scheme — Family (Finished)

Last year when South Florida-based producer DJ Scheme released his Family project featuring Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Yachty, Cordae, Ski Mask The Slump God and many more, it was reportedly missing a collaboration with late Chicago rap star Juice WRLD. Now, the 23-year-old is finally releasing “Buck 50” featuring the Legends Never Die rapper, as the cap-off to the deluxe edition of the album.

Finally, legendary Queens MC Pharoahe Monch’s new battle-hardened project A Magnificent Day For An Exorcism lands at the Honorable Mention spot to round out this week’s New Music Friday coverage.

DaniLeigh received backlash on Thursday (January 21) after sharing a snippet of her new song “Yellow Bone,” which featured lyrics about her partner wanting a light-skinned woman. Moments after posting, she was called out for using the term “yellow bone” and accused of taking aim at the skin tone of MeMe — her partner DaBaby‘s ex-girlfriend and mother of his child.

Later that day, the Miami native attempted to justify her actions with a since-deleted tweet involving a backhanded apology.

“Congratulations y’all gotta another thing to say about me when u hate,” DaniLeigh said on Twitter. “it’s all good .. only God can ‘cancel’ me… that shit don’t mean shit to me bc the people around me are the ones that know my heart and intention and real life … I’m sorry if I offended u .”

Many people including Alabama-bred rapper Chika were less than impressed by her reaction to the controversy.

“This is a terrible response to valid criticism,” Chika wrote. “No shade. as a black woman, you should be more than aware of colorism & why this song wouldn’t sit well with a black audience. it doesn’t feel good having a billion people at your neck, but it’s not about being ‘canceled.’ it’s about taking accountability.”

DaniLeigh initially responded to the public response in the comments of her Instagram video, before deleting the post altogether.

“Why I can’t make a song for my light skin baddies??” she wrote. “Why y’all think I’m hating on other colors when there are millions of songs speaking on all types.. why y’all so sensitive & take it personal .. gahhhh damn.”

Despite the public response, DaBaby commented with several yellow emojis.

Following her original tweet, DaniLeigh continued with more Twitter posts calling out “haters” and telling people to “stop playing” with her.

“YALL DON’T KNOW ME,” she said. “Ima keep letting God bless me .. while y’all sit back and judge me && sit behind y’all lil phones and type shit about another woman .. y’all all HATERS. Done talking .. bout to post how fine I looked yesterday.”

Twitter erupted on Thursday (January 21) after false reports claiming Tory Lanez’s felony assault charge had been dropped started making the rounds. Upon looking up the case on The Superior Court of California website, it was easy to determine the preliminary hearing had simply been rescheduled.

Par for the course, the rumor spread like wildfire across social media, forcing alleged shooting victim Megan Thee Stallion to take action.

“AT THIS POINT IM GETTING ANNOYED ! STOP BELIEVING EVERYTHING YOU READ ON THE MF INTERNET,” she tweeted. “Imagine how I feel waking every day seeing people LIE and turn my trauma into a joke ? That whole team figures out ways to create doubt with my story every week and the media eats it up.”

Once the chatter reached Lanez, he decided to use it to his advantage and shared a clip of an upcoming video featuring DaBaby to his Instagram account. The snippet finds Lanez and DaBaby portraying a pair of priests executing an exorcism on a possessed women.

He wrote in the caption, “CLEARLY MY 2021 IS GOING TO BE FIRE #SKAT ! Ft @dababy COMING SPRING. ALL UMBRELLAS DROP A IN THE COMMENTS . Love y’all thank u for always supporting me @christhedirector.”

Megan revealed she was shot last July after a night out with the Canadian rapper and Keeping Up With Kardashians star Kylie Jenner. She ultimately identified Lanez as the triggerman and the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) eventually charged him with felony assault.

Despite the charge, Lanez has maintained his innocence for the last several months. In September, he dropped an entire self-titled album called DAYSTAR dedicated to defending himself. On the opening track, “Money Over Fallouts,” he not only denies shooting her but also questions her injuries. 

“How the fuck you get shot in your foot, don’t hit no bones or tendons?” he raps before ending the track by bragging about having “bad bitches who want to have an orgy.”

Lanez pleaded not guilty to the felony assault charge last November.

DaniLeigh is trending all over social media right now for her latest musical output – but it’s probably not the feedback she expected.

The Dominican-bred songstress woke up on Thursday (January 21) and chose chaos, posting a snippet of her new song “Yellow Bone” where she brags about her man wanting a light-skinned woman. Not only was this seen as a direct shot at the skin tone of DaBaby’s daughter’s mother MeMe, but her liberal use of “yellow bone” – a phrase that describes a light-skinned Black woman – did not bode well with, well, anyone. (Except for DaBaby, who commented with yellow emojis.)

Within seconds, comments started pouring in, letting Dani know that the song was NOT the move. Before deleting her video, she attempted to defend her stance and argued that she was simply making an anthem for light-skinned women to love.

The backlash continued, however, and after removing the post from her TikTok, her Instagram and her Twitter, she doubled down on her “haters” in a series of tweets.

“Congratulations y’all gotta another thing to say about me when u hate,” she wrote with a thumbs up emoji. “it’s all good .. only God can ‘cancel’ me… that shit don’t mean shit to me bc the people around me are the ones that know my heart and intention and real life … I’m sorry if I offended u .”

The good ol’ “sorry if I offended you” as an apology shockingly didn’t do much to quell the criticism, causing Dani to go even harder.
