• Brandy & Monica’s Verzuz Battle: R&B Classics And Memes

Last night’s Verzuz battle between Brandy and Monica was a nostalgic trip down memory lane — complete with no shortage of memes.

When Verzuz first began at the onset of the quarantine period, some wondered whether Swizz Beatz and Timbaland‘s latest endeavor would have legs. It soon became evident the friendly competition had the makings of a longtime hip-hop fixture, a celebration of lasting discographies and impressive careers. Before long, Verzuz spawned match-ups like Scott Storch and Mannie FreshBeenie Man and Bounty Killer, and the fan-favorite tilt between DMX and Snoop Dogg. Last night, the tradition continued with another solid battle, this time between former collaborators Brandy and Monica.

Yet as we all have come to learn, Verzuz essentially grants viewers two distinct gifts. The first, a nostalgic stroll down a musical memory lane. The second, a slew of inevitable memes. With some of the battles spanning hours, it’s no surprise that a few unintentionally hilarious moments occur from time to time. Of course, it goes without saying that both Brandy and Monica boast stunning catalogs, including their classic duet “The Boy Is Mine.” Yet many simply could not get past the awkward moments that ensued between Brandy and Monica, prompting speculation that something was amiss behind the scenes.

For the most part, the narrative that social media seemed to run with suggested that Monica simply had enough of the event, or perhaps her competitor in general. Despite Brandy’s efforts to buddy up, Monica appeared to be having none of it, to the point where jovial references to a potential group and/or tour were met with swift and decisive shut-downs. That’s not to say that either party exhibited poor sportsmanship in the slightest, but listen, it doesn’t take much for the memes to take over. Even if footage of the ending reveals nothing but camaraderie between two of the game’s most respected R&B legends.

  • Nick Cannon Releases Part 1 Of Kanye West Interview: Craziness, Presidency, & More

Kanye West speaks about the moment he turned to God, being snubbed by Forbes, and more with Nick Cannon.

Class is in session between Nick Cannon and Kanye West.

An announcement was made that Nick would be interviewing the one-and-only Kanye West for his podcast this week, releasing chunks of their conversation as the week passed on. Today, we’re blessed with the first part: a 44-minute talk about craziness — or, as Kanye prefers, Yeziness — his current Presidential campaign, and more.

The first portion of their conversation is available now, where Nick introduces Kanye as a “true friend” of his. Right off the bat, Kanye starts talking about how some people perceive him to be crazy before giving the difference between crazy and “Ye-zy.” Yeah… you can see where this is going.

He then goes on to talk about how Forbes “intentionally” left him off of their annual lists to teach him a lesson that, since he didn’t get rich in a conventional fashion, he should not be rewarded.

Of course, the topic of politics came up with West speaking about his current campaign to disrupt the 2020 election, once again claiming that he’s not running for office, he’s “walking.”

As you can imagine, there’s a lot happening in this action-packed forty-four minutes. If you’ve got time today, check it out and try not to rip your hair out.

  • Big Sean Talks Kendrick Lamar, Jhené Aiko, & Donald Trump

With “Detroit 2” only days away, Big Sean opens up about Kendrick Lamar, the possibility of more Trump, Jhené Aiko, and more.

Big Sean‘s Detroit 2 is nearly upon us, arriving in full this Friday, September 4th. With the big release days away, Sean recently dropped off his brand new single “Harder Than My Demons,” produced by Mike WiLL Made-It, DJ Khalil, and more. Though only a few hours old, the track has gone a long way in setting the table for his upcoming project, which promises to be his most introspective and generally mature body of work thus far. Suffice it to say, Big Sean has a lot of ground to cover, and the Detroit lyricist recently hit up Vulture for an extensive conversation on a variety of topics.

For one, Sean opened up about his “beef” with Kendrick Lamar, which he previously addressed on wax in the Nipsey Hussle-assisted “Deep Reverence.” Here, he breaks down his mentality behind feuding with friends, explaining the importance of communication. “I didn’t even know what the fuck it was,” he reflects. “We communicated to each other that it was all love. That’s what you’re supposed to do. It should never get to a point where you can’t communicate with someone, especially somebody who had been in my house before, somebody who I’ve been invited to their mama’s house, or somebody I’ve made music with that was fire.”

He also goes on to praise his partner Jhene Aiko, to whom he penned a heartfelt shoutout  on Nas‘ “Replace Me.” “She definitely has helped a lot,” explains Sean. “It’s cool when you can just be there for each other, especially in times where the world is in peril and things aren’t regular. Things have drastically changed, so it definitely has helped ground me for sure.” Expect him to address his relationship further once Detroit 2 lands in full — in the meantime, check out the full interview over at Vulture.

  • Drake’s “Certified Lover Boy” Adorns The CN Tower

With “Certified Lover Boy” seemingly around the corner, Drake came through to leave his mark on Toronto’s CN Tower.

When Drake first took up the mantle of 6ix God, what might have been a self-aggrandizing title quickly became an unquestionable truth. Look no further than his position as an ambassador of the Toronto Raptors, which has all but cemented him as a fixture in the world of Toronto sports; not to mention the fact that he’s probably the only rapper capable of naming three hockey players off the top of the dome.

Suffice it to say, Drake has embraced his roots to the fullest, and it’s hard to deny that the man has serious pull in his home city. Case in point, the recent display adorning the CN Tower, which seemed to indicate that Certified Lover Boy is on its way. During a recent Instagram story, Drizzy shared an image of the Toronto landmark, which was covered in hearts — a reference to the project’s romantic motif, which has already drawn division from the rapper’s passionate fanbase.

No matter where you stand on Drake’s upcoming album title, it’s hard not to be impressed at the extent of his reach. Not everybody can simply stamp their brand atop an iconic landscape, but it’s clear that the love between Drake and the city of Toronto is as mutual as it gets. And while he has yet to reveal an official release date — though October is right around the corner — this latest display seems to suggest that the project is coming sooner rather than later. Between this and the Lil Durk-assisted “Laugh Now Cry Later,” it’s safe to say we’re in the middle of a rollout as we speak.
