Jhene Aiko & Wiz Khalifa Are Never Coming “Down Again”

Never land.

Jhené Aiko returned with Chilombo (Deluxe), adding nine tracks to her original release. The new, bulked up album adds a Wiz Khalifa feature on the track entitled “Down Again.” Both Wiz and Jhene are very vocal in their music about their love for marijuana, so it is no surprise that they team up on this smoking anthem.

Playful poppy synths give “Down Again” a bubbly vibe, and Wiz kicks the song off with a verse. Typically, the rapper is placed at the end of the song. Or, if they do appear at the beginning, it’s only for a short moment before they reappear to spit a full verse later in the song (think “Best of Me” by Mya and Jay-Z). But, on “Down Again,” Wiz lays out his full verse, with some vocal backing from Jhene, right at the beginning. This is a fun, pop/R&B fusion track that is made for Summer smoking adventures.

Quotable Lyrics
I’ma get the bag, I’ma get the bag
I’ma get the money while they mad, you gon’ make me laugh
I’ma pull the duffle out with cash, fill it up with gas
I don’t really think about your past when I puff and pass
Baby, this will knock you on your ass, make you do a dance

Joey Bada$$ Can’t Help But To “Shine”

Joey badass album cover

“Everybody Loves the Sunshine” is always a classic sample.

Joey Bada$$ appeared with The Light Pack this past week, blessing fans with three new songs. However brief the project, it is still potent. The EP ends with the track “Shine.” Produced by Statik Selektah, “Shine” flips the ever-popular and always classic “Everybody Loves The Sunshine” by Roy Ayers. The sample gives us strong Summer vibes. Selektah takes the most popular parts of the original track, namely the familiar piano riff and a cut of the OG chorus. It’s really hard to mess up a Roy Ayers sample.

Joey Bada$$ is on his lyrical throne on The Light Pack. Soulful, cognizant, and playful, Joey sounds like he’s in his zone. He throws down a flow that fits perfectly into the pocket of the instrumental. From the gorgeous instrumental to the on-point bars, this track shines.

Quotable Lyrics
I got no time to waste (No), life is fast-paced (Yup)
Keep the tracks runnin’, never come in last place (Rrah)
How’s your bitch when I come around? She’s not safe (Nope)
No, she be leavin’ with me ’cause you got bad taste
She need a back brace (Yup), I need a backrub (What else?)
I tell her, “Put that face down and that ass up” (Yeah)

August Alsina & Rick Ross Deliver A Tribute To “Entanglements”

August Alsina & Rick Ross join forces on “Entanglements.”

It has been a strange few weeks in the media but perhaps, August Alsina‘s admission that he did, in fact, have a relationship with Jada Pinkett Smith was mind-blowing, especially after seeing clips of Will Smith getting a shoulder rub from August. Jada still managed to steal the spotlight from him, though, after referring to their intimacy as an “entanglement.” August became the laughing stock of the internet but he’s used it to his advantage.

At the wee hours of the morning, August Alsina unleashed a brand new single titled, “Entanglements” ft. Rick Ross. Arriving days after Rozay suggested Aug’ release an album under the same name, the pair flex on their former flings and entanglement partners. August, specifically, sounds like he’s finding some sort of closure in the midst of the media blitz surrounding his own entanglement with Jada Pinkett Smith.

Quotable Lyrics
Shawty leanin’ on my shoulder, got her questionin’ my willpower
Jaded by her beauty, but her reputation real solid
Mornin’ down the hallway, I can tell you how I feel about it
Caught up in the Matrix, and I doubt if I can get up out it

Beyoncé’s “Black Is King” Gets A New Trailer

A new trailer for Beyoncé’s “Black Is King” visual album for Disney+ has been released.

Beyoncé’s highly anticipated visual album, Black Is King, will be here before we know it, and to further build the hype, Disney has released a new trailer for the musically-driven film. On Sunday (July 19th), Walt Disney Studios shared a new sneak peek at the project, which stars Bey, Jay-Z, Tina Knowles, Naomi Campbell, Lupita Nyong’o, Kelly Rowland, and more.

“You were formed by the heat of the galaxy,” Bey can be heard narrating, as shots of the protagonist of the young king’s journey is shown. “What a thing to be both unique and familiar. To be one and the same, and still unlike any other. Life is a set of choices. Lead, or be led astray. Follow your light, or lose it.”

Disney+ also shared a new poster for Black Is King, which includes a striking shot from the opening of the new trailer.

Black Is King was announced at the end of June, shortly after reports circulated that Bey had secured a major deal with Disney. That same day, Bey shared the first trailer for the visual album on IGTV, along with a lengthy message about how much the project means to her. “‘Black Is King’ is a labor of love,” she wrote. “It is my passion project that I have been filming, researching and editing day and night for the past year. I’ve given it my all and now it’s yours.”

“With this visual album, I wanted to present elements of Black history and African tradition, with a modern twist and a universal message, and what it truly means to find your self-identity and build a legacy,” she continued. “I only hope that from watching, you leave feeling inspired to continue building a legacy that impacts the world in an immeasurable way. I pray that everyone sees the beauty and resilience of our people.”

Black Is King will be available to stream exclusively through Disney+ on July 31st.

Nick Cannon, Kehlani Mourn Death Of Rapper Ryan Bowers

Nick Cannon and Kehlani took to social media to mourn the loss of rapper Ryan Bowers, who died by suicide after recovering from a police shooting last year.

Nick Cannon and Kehlani paid tribute to their dear friend, rapper Ryan Bowers, who took his own life earlier this week after recovering from a police shooting last year that left him in critical condition. The sad news broke early Sunday morning that Ryan, who was signed to the music division of Nick’s NCredible Entertainment, had committed suicide. Few details are known about the tragic death at the moment, but a few of Ryan’s famous friends shared some heartfelt messages about the artist on Instagram.

“Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse…” Nick wrote on a photo of him and Ryan. “2020 is definitely the most f*cked up year I’ve ever witnessed! After waking up & barely rising from my own dark contemplation of continuing my physical existence on this planet, this powerful warrior actually had the balls to do it. I’ve said it once and I will say it again, this was the strongest dude I’ve ever met!”

Nick then goes on to recount the horrific incident that occurred between Ryan and the San Diego Police Department last year that left him fighting for his life. Back in 2019, a family member called the police on Ryan after he had allegedly threatened to slit his own throat. Upon the cops’ arrival, Ryan approached them wielding a different knife, which resulted in one of the officers opening fire on him. He was shot in the upper body and left in critical condition, which led him to go into a coma for months. However, as Nick explains, he eventually woke up and began his recovery, regaining the ability to walk and talk and even make music again.

“Even through his strength he would whisper to me that ‘Everything Still Hurts,'” Nick continued. “His music was definitely his safe haven and it was amazing. Paying for lawyers, putting money in his pocket, even putting the music together all meant nothing because I feel like I failed my little brother. The Cops will get away with shooting another kid, everyone will just look at this as yet another loving farewell post, but to me @ryanbowersob was so much more than that. Once again my brother you have put this world in perspective for me. You would do that quite often because I never understood how someone who was experiencing sooo much pain could still laugh and smile through it all…I am certain that your energy will never die and your Spirit is eternal, so I ask you still to forgive me for letting you down Warrior. I can’t help but think if I wasnt so engulfed in my own bullsh*t I could’ve been there for you when you finally took your life after several attempts… F*ck this place!!”

Kehlani also mourned the loss of Ryan on Instagram, sharing some stories and throwback photos of the two of them in a heartbreaking tribute.

“We stayed up every night together craaaackinnn the f*ck uppppp and talked about ‘making it’ when we lived at Chaz house. Sneaking and smoking on the roof at the Ncredible office everyday. Really horrible freestyles. I understood you, and when it came down to me going back to my hometown to figure it out myself at one point i felt like you was the only person who understood ME. Our last conversation will haunt me forever. You know why. I can understand why, i just wish it wasn’t like this. My heart is broken. I thought sh*t couldn’t no sicker and it just did. I begggggged you bro. You are at peace and that’s all i can find any sort of peace in myself. I can’t believe i’m writing this. Rest in peace to a real fighter… my real fam… i love you Ryan. F*ck this year… on everything.”

Rest in peace, Ryan Bowers. We’re sending our love to his family, friends, and fans during this time.
