The investigation of the sexual abuse allegations made against R. Kelly was propelled by a sex tape that appears to show the singer engaging in sexual activity with a minor. This video footage is deemed as a smoking gun by attorney Michael Avenatti. The case against the R&B icon may have gained additional strength with the arrival of new physical evidence.

Kelly’s DNA was found in semen on one of the accuser’s shirts, and semen found on one worn by another was submitted for DNA testing, Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx said.

Kelly met one of the accusers when she was celebrating her 16th birthday party at a restaurant and another when he signed an autograph during his 2008 trial on child-pornography charges, Foxx said.

The judge has allowed R. Kelly to remain free on bail as he awaits trial. His attorney claimed the required $1 million surpasses his client’s finances as he might only be able to afford $100,000 of that sum. Kelly is expected to work with his legal team and financial advisors to put together the funds that would earn his release. R. Kelly was also made to surrender his passport, halting any plans for touring.
