Estelle Celebrates Human Connection On “Lovers Rock”

Cover

Estelle examines simpler times on reggae-infused “Lovers Rock.”

Estelle has returned with a new album, following up her 2015 effort True Romance. Her latest project, Lovers Rock, finds the singer exploring a reggae-infused direction, apparently inspired by her parent’s generation. As she explains to Exclaim, her birth was the result of the “Lovers Rock” era, which centered around the harmonious unities of love and music. Linking up with collaborators like Chronixx, HoodCelebrity, and Luke James, Estelle sounds at ease, sliding over slick production with grace.”I was writing the album trying to figure out why I am the way I am. I was born in the middle of the ‘lovers rock’ era and that’s why I probably love it so much. It really is the sound of my youth, of my childhood,” says Estelle, to Exclaim. Once again, nostalgia proves a prominent theme on Lovers Rock; it’s always fascinating to see what drives and inspires artists, and rest assured that Estelle does not disappoint on her latest go-around.

We go looking for love in all the wrong places. We go on radio shows looking for love from the hosts and their audience. We put out albums, our truths, in hopes the public will love them and catapult us to great successes. We hope our labels will love how the singles perform. We conquer as many women as we can as if it’ll make us love ourselves. Instead of finding one that who shows you the man you could be. We share only the good parts of our lives on social media. In hopes of making people fall in love with us. One like at a time.”

“This album is about finding ground. About not poisoning your own well. About finding and tethering yourself to the love that truly fulfills you. Love of self. Love of others. Lovers. Family. Friends. Fans. You’ve all given me all the affirmation I’ll ever need. That is the Milky Way. The only way to go.”

Stream T-Pain’s New Mixtape “Everything Must Go Vol. 1”

Cover

T-Pain drops his return mixtape “Everything Must Go Vol. 1.”

Hate it or love it, auto-tune was pronounced dead maybe a decade too soon. Though Jay-Z has upheld his end of the bargain, by remaining true to himself, so has T-Pain as a purveyor of the vocal affectation. You may have liked the unplugged version of T-Pain that he displayed on NPR’s Tiny Desk, but anything beyond that point of manipulation would seem an embellishment from therappa ternt sanga. The novelty of hearing T-Pain relax his vocal chords wore off fast, and he’s back to prove his instincts correct.”Everything Must Go Vol. 1″ is T-Pain’s way of staging a clearance sale of all his loose ends, at least at first glance. Songs like “Dance All Night” see T-Pain revisit the blippy sounds of his first and second albums. With respect to vocal arrangements, T-Pain hasn’t lost a step. He still shows a willingness to rev his engine at short notice. The effect always for continuity when the beat reaches a standstill, and he doesn’t go at it alone. Ace HoodJoe Budden, and Joey Bada$$ all make surprise appearances on the mixtape, the latter two on a song titled “That’s Me,” which serves to note that retirement can be repealed at any time.Enjoy.

Roc Marciano Shows Knxwledge His Jail Tats On “dntaskmefrshit.”

Cover

“dntaskmefrshit.” aka Don’t Ask Me For Sh*t.

Picture Roc Marciano a NY thoroughbred inserting a token into a Phone Booth, back when quarters were the asking price for a 5 minute toll. And if you produced a second quarter in the allotted time you could hog the joint for another ten or so minutes. On the receiving end Knxwledge impersonates a bail bondsman and Marci sets off running never to be seen again. The phone call lasts just under four minutes, so the 2nd coin gets slotted back into his change purse, only to be wagered over a loose cigarette at the next interval. For those who can’t fathom a registered pimp like Roc Marciano showing any semblance of mercy, think again. His 4-minute beat tape with bedroom producer Knxwledge explores a world of breathtaking anachronisms over beats that would never pass the cutting room of conventional hip-hop. They have one thing in common within this anatomical shell: they’d much rather offer the wedding party an exotic fruit basket than hand over an envelope stuffed with dough.

Knxwledge Harbors Strange Feelings Of Nostalgia On “HEX.PRT12”

Cover

Knxwledge takes some time out from serial dating and loan sharking.

Knxwledge’s issues out beat tapes like a parishioner combing through their notes. The beatmaker noted for his work with Paak and Kendrick Lamar, among others, returns with ca beat tape tinged with memories of the past, some less insular than others. The album cover borrows the proverb “Poor are those who have eyes but cannot see,” words first muttered to describe esoteric knowledge of sacred art and ancient hand-me-downs.Knxwledge has a habit of releasing material when we least expect it, usually on a quiet weekend afternoon while he catches up on sleep. Included on HEX.PRT12 is Knxwledge’s refix of Cardi B‘s “Be Careful,” a song that carries a tone that permeates throughout the beat tape. It’s no secret likes to subvert tone and feeling, of the songs he samples. On “ifikudgo” completely flips the script on the Angie Martinez’ classic “If I Could Go,” upending her bravado with jazzier tones. Knxwledge sure enjoys playing Heinrich von Frankenstein with his cadavers.Give ‘er a listen.

Teyana Taylor Caps Off G.O.O.D. Music’s Summer With “K.T.S.E.”

Cover

Teyana Taylor brings sensual R&B to the G.O.O.D. Music lineup.

It’s been quite a wild ride this past few weeks. When Kanye West announced that he would be releasing a new album executively produced by him every week for five weeks it was almost unbelievable. Against all odds, and his own last-minute working habits, we’ve finally reached the end of our destination: Teyana Taylor‘s new album, K.T.S.E.This project marks a stark break from the previous G.O.O.D. Music albums that have been released this summer. Without even listening to the album, Teyana has already broken the sacred “7 songs” rule of Kanye’s album, with the total songs on her project being eight. Secondly, since Teyana is an R&B artist following a series of bombastic rap albums, Kanye switches his production style as well. There aren’t any moments on here that soar to the sonic highs of a song like “Ghost Town” or “Feel The Love.” Rather, Teyana’s approach is softer, more soulful, and Kanye follows in turn. There’s probably more acoustic guitar in these eight songs than Kanye has ever used on a single project, but they’re still punctuated by his signature vocal samples. The music won’t put you to sleep, however. Teyana does get aggressive at points, most notably on the genre-bending closer “Wtp.” Like the other G.O.O.D. Music albums, K.T.S.E. only runs just over 20 minutes, so it’s definitely worth checking out, even if you’ve been skeptical about Kanye’s summer output thus far.

King Los Plays Target Practice On “410 Survival Kit” Mixtape

Cover

King Los kindly drops “410 Survival Kit” for B’more’s uninvited guests.

Word to King Los, his long awaited album delivers on the promise he’s displayed. As the album title suggest, Los describes Baltimore as a continuous grind, but unlike other auteurs describing life in his city, Los explores the hardship and the joys. Los breaks down human experience in a way that really speaks to his introverted self. That isn’t to say he won’t turnup on occasion. Songs like “Dey Geekin” and “Dope Dealer” go off like a sprinkler.410 Survival Kit makes good use of King Los’ black book. Features are grouped according to their appropriate “fit,” like Yo Gotti and O.T. Genasis on a record about trapping, and Tate Kobang & more localized talent on songs relating to Baltimore or regional charm. the album also features the likes of Swizz BeatzLola Monroe and Wiz Khalifa, so be sure to play close attention for baton passes. King Los is very much in mid season form on 410 Survival Kit.
